33 Tehama – Lithocrete Plaza

A striking public art installation featuring Lithocrete paving with artist-designed polka dot motifs, seamlessly integrating art and architecture in San Francisco’s SoMa district.

T.B. Penick & Sons

The 33 Tehama project in San Francisco’s South of Market (SoMa) neighborhood showcases a vibrant public plaza designed in collaboration with renowned artist Yayoi Kusama. The centerpiece of the plaza is Kusama’s signature polka dot motif, brought to life through Lithocrete paving with intricate red glass inlays, creating a visually striking contrast between the red integrally colored Lithocrete and the white-aggregate seeded Lithocrete with a honed finish.

This installation is part of San Francisco’s 1%-for-art program, which mandates that public art constitutes at least 1% of the total construction cost. The project extends beyond the plaza into the building’s lobby, seamlessly maintaining the artistic theme throughout the space. CMG Landscape Architecture, in collaboration with fine art consultant Michele C. Quinn of MCQ Fine Art, LLC, worked alongside T.B. Penick & Sons to bring this vision to reality, blending public art with urban placemaking.
